Overview of AVC's On Line Obituary Index.
This program allows you to scan obituaries directly into a Microsoft Access database. Once you have the obituary in the database, Access indexes each word in the obituary with the click of a button.. This allows you to quickly find an obituary by just keying in a few search words. The first 200 characters of each matching obituary are then displayed for you to view. The number of matching words are shown at the right of each listing. The entries with the most words matched are shown at the top of the list. A button beside each listing allows you to view the full obituary.
The program is designed to make data entry for your staff or volunteers as simple as possible. There are no search fields to fill in. Simply use a scanner to scan the original or copy of the obituary. Use OCR software to convert it to text and drop this text into the obituary field in the file. Clean up any text not correctly converted and click on INDEX to index the obituary. Once the obituary has been indexed it is immediately available on the internet using any internet browser.
If you have an existing electronic obituary file it can be imported into this program and be accessed along with any new obituaries you scan into the software. Yes, this software could also be modified to hold any old text documents that the library would like to scan and allow patrons to access over the internet.
